Arsenal are weighing up making a late swoop to land Aston Villa star Morgan Rogers after Kai Havertz's injury has resulted in members of the Emirates Stadium recruitment department looking to dip into the market for another attacking presence before the fast-approaching deadline, according to The Sun.
The Gunners have not been afraid to splash the cash since the summer transfer window opened for business, with Viktor Gyokeres making himself their new first-choice marksman after completing a switch worth up to £63.5million from Sporting, but boss Mikel Arteta wants to make further alterations to his squad.
Gunners Consider Lodging Late Rogers Offer
Morgan Rogers in action for Aston Villa
Arsenal are preparing to make a dramatic move to sign Rogers after Havertz's injury has forced him onto the sidelines, according to The Sun, but they are at risk of facing an uphill battle to reach an agreement as Aston Villa value him at £80million and are unlikely to entertain offers below that figure.
The England international - described as 'frightening' by Sky Sports journalist Dan Bardell - has been in Arteta's sights throughout the summer and the likelihood of the Gunners heading into negotiations has increased after they have been forced to contend with a key member of the squad finding himself on the treatment table.
Havertz is set for a spell out of action after sustaining a knee injury and, although the duration of his lay-off has not been determined due to assessments being at an early stage, Arsenal are eyeing Rogers as they aim to avoid a situation where they are light of options in the opening weeks of the campaign.
But the attacking midfielder still has five years remaining on his £75,000-per-week contract, meaning that Aston Villa are in a strong position and under no pressure to sanction his departure if their Premier League counterparts up the ante in their pursuit before the September 1 deadline.
The Sun report that Arteta personally congratulated Rogers when he received his PFA Young Player of the Year award in Manchester on Tuesday and, despite spending an initial £48.5million to land Noni Madueke from Chelsea, the Spanish tactician is threatening to raid another domestic rival.
GIVEMESPORT sources revealed in June that Arsenal had made initial checks over whether it would be possible to recruit the 23-year-old, while Chelsea have also been keeping tabs on his situation, but Havertz's injury has resulted in them toying with the idea of lodging a formal proposal.
