Why Julian Edelman thinks Patriots rookie running back could be ‘steal of the draft’

TreVeyon Henderson has a fan in Julian Edelman.

“The former New England Patriots wide receiver gushed about how the rookie is “probably the steal of the draft” during a recent conversation with NBC Sports Boston’s Tom E. Curran.

“I think that’s the kind of guy you needed to draft that becomes part of that nucleus with Drake (Maye),” Edelman said. “That’s how you build your team. You build your team through the draft, guys that you want to come in to implement what your identity is."

Edelman noted that the positive comments from coaches about Henderson’s maturity have also caught his eye.

The Super Bowl LIII MVP said recently on his “Dudes on Dudes” podcast that Henderson “looked hungry” during Edelman’s visit to Gillette Stadium to take in training camp.

Henderson had an impressive preseason debut that included running a punt return 100 yards for a touchdown. He’s looked like a game-changer throughout training camp and could be someone Maye ends up relying on in 2025.

“If he can go out and have production, everyone’s gonna see how he works, how he is as a person on and off the field,” Edelman told Curran. “It makes the other guys in the locker room like, ‘Man, that’s why he’s doing this.’ So I think that was my biggest takeaway. He could be a really good weapon.”

Henderson knows a lot of people are excited about what he’s brought to the Patriots thus far, but understands that the love fans feel for him now can quickly turn into hate if he doesn’t perform.

“I don’t really pay attention to all the social media stuff,” Henderson said. “The biggest thing I know, people praise me now because I have this success. But I feel like it doesn’t come from true love. At the same time, people see me as a football player, so if things come crashing down, I know that love turns into hate. The biggest thing is I keep my eyes on God and focus on what he sees in me… That’s what I keep my focus on.”

After consecutive 4-13 seasons, the Patriots are starting fresh again. They fired Jerod Mayo after one year and brought in Mike Vrabel who’s already made plenty of changes to the team and its culture.

Whether the Patriots return to the playoffs next season remains to be seen, but there seems to be more excitement around the six-time Super Bowl champions this year than there has been in years past.
