Man United want to sign a defensive midfielder this summer, and have been linked to Adam Wharton and Carlos Baleba.
Manchester United are keen to add more reinforcements before the end of the transfer window, as they want to bring in a defensive midfielder who can play alongside Bruno Fernandes in the deeper midfield role for Ruben Amorim.
In the first game against Arsenal, Casemiro started alongside Fernandes, but it seems that United want someone else. They had been going after Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba, but the Red Devils were priced out of a deal for him, with the Seagulls wanting over £100m.
Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton has also emerged as a target for Man United, but the English club may be reluctant to sell the 21-year-old as Eberechi Eze and Marc Guehi could both be in line to leave Selhurst Park this summer to Tottenham and Liverpool, respectively. They have now reportedly identified a new alternative.
Man United considering £69m bid for Camavinga
In somewhat of a surprising transfer development, reports in Spain are now claiming that Man United are considering making a shock bid for Real Madrid midfielder Eduardo Camavinga, who is regarded as one of the best central midfielders in the world.
Spanish media outlet Fichajes are reporting that United have had internal conversations over a potential deal for Camavinga, and are considering a £69m bid for the French international, in a move which would improve the Red Devils’ midfield immensely. He has won two Champions League titles and two La Liga titles with Madrid so far in his career.
Last year, the 22-year-old was dealing with an ankle injury which kept him out for a significant period of games for Real Madrid, but it is understood that he is in the long-term plans of Xabi Alonso, although he wasn’t fit for their first game of the season against Osasuna.
What has Camavinga said about his future?
The French midfielder hasn’t spoken out on his future this summer, but he is back in training after recovering from his injury, so it is clear that the 22-year-old is working to feature for Real Madrid in La Liga this season under new manager Xabi Alonso.
However, there has been interest from the Premier League in Camavinga before, and last year, he committed his plans to the Bernabeu for the long term. He said in an interview with French programme TeleFoot: “I want to finish my career at Real Madrid. Even if they make me play as a goalkeeper, I'll play!”
But, if Alonso doesn’t begin to keep him in his starting XI once he does return from injury, Camavinga’s head could be turned, especially by a team like United, that can promise nailed first-team football every week under Amorim.
But, they would have to convince him without the offer of Champions League football, which could prove to be difficult. If it was a move that Man United could pull off though, it would be an excellent piece of business.
