Alexander Isak is keen to leave St James’ Park and was omitted from Newcastle’s pre-season tour of the Far East last month, officially due to a minor thigh injury.
The Sweden international has trained alone all summer and did not feature in any of the Magpies’ friendlies.
He was also left out of the squad for Saturday’s 0-0 draw at Aston Villa and is expected to miss Monday’s clash with Liverpool.
On Tuesday night, Isak took to social media to express his frustration over what he described as “broken promises” at Newcastle.
The club responded hours later, insisting they remain committed to keeping the striker.
An official club statement read: “We are disappointed to have been alerted to a social media post by Alexander Isak this evening.
“We are clear in response that Alex remains under contract and that no commitment has ever been made by a club official that Alex can leave Newcastle United this summer.
“We want to keep our best players, but we also understand players have their own wishes and we listen to their views.
“As explained to Alex and his representatives, we must always take into consideration the best interests of Newcastle United, the team and our supporters in all decisions and we have been clear that the conditions of a sale this summer have not transpired.
“We do not foresee those conditions being met. This is a proud football club with proud traditions and we strive to retain our family feel.
“Alex remains part of our family and will be welcomed back when he is ready to rejoin his teammates.”
Amid this summer’s high-profile transfer saga, Liverpool are still interested in signing Isak before the September 1 deadline.
However, Tottenham’s latest transfer plans could complicate Alexander Isak’s summer move.
Newcastle have been linked with a move for Brentford’s Yoane Wissa all summer, but Spurs could rival Thomas Frank’s side.
According to the Daily Mail’s Craig Hope, Spurs are considering offering Richarlison plus cash for Crystal Palace’s Eberechi Eze, valued at around £60m.
If the deal happens, Spurs boss Frank could then target Wissa, though Wissa prefers a move to Newcastle, who recently offered £35m plus £5m in add-ons.
Newcastle’s improved bid for Yoane Wissa was turned down by Brentford on Wednesday.
