Matty Cash’s words years after leaving Nottingham Forest offer hopes of a return

Nottingham Forest are reportedly considering a move to re-sign Matty Cash, who left for Aston Villa back in the summer of 2020.

Cash signed for Aston Villa while the Reds were still in the Championship, meaning that the club struggled to compete with the Premier League finances.

Since the move, the Polish international full-back has made nearly 183 appearances for The Villans, while the Reds have catapulted themselves into UEFA competition in the meantime.

With both clubs now at the same level, Forest are looking into bringing Cash back, making comments on the Reds in the time since his departure particularly interesting.

Matty Cash still feels fondly about Nottingham Forest

The City Ground faithful voted Cash as their Player of the Season prior to his move to Villa, highlighting that he was ready for the step up to the Premier League after replacing Tendayi Darikwa.

His education at Forest has helped Cash to go on to star in the Champions League, but he has remained passionate about the fond times he had in the Championship with the Reds.

Speaking on Sky Sports News’ ‘Do you Know’ segment in 2023, Cash said: “It was a dream come true [making his Forest debut]. I always say, I’m not from Nottingham, but it feels like home to me really. I was there for seven years. A lot of good memories there. Nothing but good memories.”

Surely, then, a return “home” would appeal to Cash, but the Reds are also considering other, potentially more cost-effective options.

Nottingham Forest are considering Matty Cash alternatives

Forest fans were excited about the Cash news, with the romance of reuniting with the 28-year-old making him a potentially top option for the right back role.

However, Edu and the recruitment team are assessing their options as a backup to Ola Aina remains a priority before deadline day.

Alongside Cash, Forest are in talks to sign José Angel Carmona, who would be a cheaper option given Cash’s Premier League wages.

With Nuno Espírito Santo desperate to add full-backs to allow the Reds to compete in both domestic and continental competitions, it remains to be seen who the recruitment team prioritise.
