Manchester United could be facing a Rasmus Hojlund “problem” if he fails to perform well on loan this season.

Hojlund looks set to leave Man United following the £74million signing of Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig.

The 22-year-old was left out of Ruben Amorim’s squad for the 1-0 opening-day defeat to Arsenal in a clear indication his time at Old Trafford is coming to an end.

Hojlund has largely failed to impress for Man United since joining in a £72million deal from Serie A side Atalanta in 2023.

Football Insider revealed on 12 August Hojlund is only likely to leave on loan this summer despite the club’s hopes of securing a permanent deal.

Man United face Rasmus Hojlund transfer blow

This article contains exclusive comment fromStefan Borson, a former financial adviser to Man City.

Fabrizio Romano reported on 13 August AC Milan are advancing on a deal for Hojlund, with the Italian giants expected to pay his full salary, a €6million (£5.2million) loan fee and include a €45million (£38.8million) option-to-buy clause.

The Denmark international registered 10 goals and four assists in 52 appearances last season, taking his overall tally to 26 goals and six assists in 95 outings at Old Trafford.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Borson said: “The problem with all these sorts of loans and this is a problem United have had themselves is if they don’t work and the player comes back having performed very poorly, then you’re in real trouble because then it’s two clubs he’s not performed well at.

“Who’s looking at him then for €40million (£35.5million)? Nobody.

“You’d be lucky then to get €25million (£21.6million) because where is he going to perform well?

“He’s not had a good season since Atalanta three years ago if he doesn’t perform well at Milan.

“There are just limited options with some of these players.

“They are on big money. Even if it’s not the super money, it’s big money.

“There are just very few people who have got that kind of cash to be able to pay those sorts of wages.”
