In-form Man Utd ace expertly identifies two biggest features of Ruben Amorim’s tactical system,‘I very quickly knew…’

A Manchester United star who is currently thriving under Ruben Amorim has offered an incredible insight into the much-talked-about topic around the manager’s tactical system.

Ruben Amorim rolled out his Manchester United tactical system from the moment that the former Sporting CP head coach took charge of his first match at the club.

The 40-year-old Portuguese coach shifted the Red Devils to a three-man backline and Ruben Amorim incorporated the use of wing-backs instead of full-backs.

United have also dropped the use of wingers on the pitch, with Amorim’s formation set-up leaning towards two No 10 roles who are on either side in support of the striker.

Amorim was urged to walk back on the immediate implementation of his system last season, but the United manager stood firm on his tactics and philosophy.

Mason Mount’s spell at United has been curtailed by injuries since his arrival, but Amorim has kept faith by building up a consistent run of matches for the player.

The Red Devils star has played as a No 10 in Amorim’s system, but Mount was also used in a false nine role in United’s 1-0 defeat to Arsenal on Sunday at Old Trafford.

Speaking to the Inside United magazine, Mount has now revealed two key details of Amorim’s system are spotting the “patterns” and recognising the “movements” in play.

“I obviously have the experience of playing in his formation and this type of football before, so bringing my knowledge and experience into the team, especially when he came in, was very helpful,” he said, as per Manchester United’s official website.

“A lot of the patterns and a lot [of] the movements, it’s something that I am very used to.”

Mason Mount makes his position clear on Ruben Amorim’s expectations for the Man Utd No 7‘s role

Mason Mount produced a strong showing in the false nine role in the first half of United’s opening 2025-26 Premier League match against Arsenal on the weekend.

The United No 7 shirt-holder was in attack alongside Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo before he was subbed off in the second half for Benjamin Sesko.

Mount has said that he is clear about the demands that United manager Amorim has for him in a match and his aim is to support his team in any way that he can.

“I very quickly knew exactly what he wanted and in games I am just trying to do that as much as I can and obviously help the lads around me,” he continued.

“If it’s younger lads coming into training and maybe they don’t understand little details here and there, with my experience, I can help them with that.

“We’re all helping each other and every day that goes by, we are understanding more and more what the manager wants, and what we can do as a team to improve, so we are getting there.”

United are 14th in the Premier League table after their opening defeat to the Gunners in the new campaign and the Red Devils will face Fulham on Sunday.
