Former Alabama RB Jahmyr Gibbs is now a star for the Detroit Lions.

In a different universe, that first sentence would have read: “Former Ohio State RB Jahmyr Gibbs is now a star for the Detroit Lions.”

That’s right. Gibbs, who became a key part of the 2022 Alabama Crimson Tide squad that went 11-2 and won the Sugar Bowl over Kansas State, almost ended up in the Big Ten instead.

During an interview with Ryan Clark of ESPN, Gibbs revealed that he was ready to commit to the Buckeyes out of high school, but Ohio State called at the last second to say it wanted Trey Sermon out of the transfer portal instead:

“I was mainly going to go to Ohio State, I ain’t gonna cap,” Gibbs said. “I was gonna go to Ohio State and then I forget what happened. They called me — I was gonna commit — they called me and it was something about scholarships or something and they wanted Trey Sermon out of the portal. So I’m like ‘alright, I just would’ve committed to ya.'”

So instead of heading to Columbus, Gibbs spent 2 years at Georgia Tech before making his way to Tuscaloosa for the 2022 season, where he posted 926 rushing yards and 444 receiving yards to go with 10 combined touchdowns.

Would that have happened if he had ended up at Ohio State coming out of high school? It’s unlikely, to say the least. The Tide are probably pretty happy with the way that turned out.
