(WDBJ) - August 20, 1920:
A meeting in Canton, Ohio included representatives of four professional football teams. They created the American Professional Football Conference.
There was a membership fee of $100 per team, but no team ever paid it. Scheduling was disorganized and left up to individual teams. Some teams even disbanded by that December.
The Akron Pros were recognized as champions.
Two years later, the league had grown to 18 teams. It was then renamed the National Football League.
The NFL is now worth over $200 billion.
