Never too late | Don’t underestimate the Salthouse factor: West Ham transfers

West Ham and Unique Sports Group – Will Salthouse – go together like Halloween and Vampire bats. Often derided by Hammers fans, the close relationship between Hammers chairman David Sullivan and player’s agent Will Salthouse has on occasion, to be fair, brought in excellent results.

Apart from some of the less stellar signings, Salthouse was instrumental in getting the Aaron Wan Bissaka transfer concluded-to name but one. Derided this summer for the seemingly inevitable arrival of Callum Wilson at London Stadium, the constant close liaison that takes place between agent and Chairman is often unpopular with the fan base and has been the subject of intense media criticism in the past.

The story that has broken this evening concerning England u21 winger Jonathan Rowe is an interesting one: Marseille, Rowe’s club, have decided to part ways with the hugely talented forward after fighting broke out at the weekend between Rowe and teammate Adrien Rabiot. Several clubs are interested but according to thehardtackle.com, ‘West Ham United and Everton have been alerted to Rowe’s availability’.

I bet they have.

Almost a like for like left (or right wing) replacement for Mohammed Kudus and unlikely to cost more than Marseille paid for him, £17 million which for an England u21 championship-winning forward – is a steal.

Especially a two-footed, fast paced willing runner who is happy to track back as well as drive forwards: And before you dismiss out of hand West Ham’s chances of landing Rowe -with reported interest from Everton and Crystal Palace – it is worth noting that Rowe’s agent is Unique Sports Group: a Salthouse client.

We could almost forgive the Sullivan – Salthouse collaboration for signing Callum Wilson, if they could combine to bring Jonathan Rowe to West Ham.

The forward is said to have ‘agreed terms’ with Bologna – but as we know from bitter experience, ‘personal terms’ means pretty much nothing without the two clubs’ agreement. When Rowe’s name flashed across my screen earlier I dismissed him – until it was pointed out to me who his agent was. Interesting. One just to keep an eye on.
