The Philadelphia 76ers are coming off a disastrous season in which they finished 13th in the Eastern Conference with a 24-58 record.
However, their injury-riddled 2024-25 campaign earned them the No. 3 overall pick, which the Sixers used to select Baylor standout V.J. Edgecombe. Philadelphia also added Auburn product Johni Broome in the second round and signed Trendon Watford in free agency.
With Kelly Oubre and Andre Drummond opting into their player options, and Philadelphia re-signing Eric Gordon, Kyle Lowry and Justin Edwards, the team has the tools to make noise in a wide-open Eastern Conference. The organization also remains in contract talks with restricted free agent Quentin Grimes. Still, availability remains a major concern for the 76ers, as Joel Embiid, Jared McCain, Paul George and Tyrese Maxey all missed extended periods due to injury last season.
Sixers continue building toward the future

David Aldridge of The Athletic recently ranked each team’s offseason, placing the 76ers at No. 16.
“You can definitely see a post-Embiid skeleton coming into shape in Philly, with McCain, Maxey and Edgecombe becoming a potentially wildly fun trio in the coming years,” [he wrote](https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6549876/2025/08/20/nba-offseason-2025-rankings-knicks-sixers-bulls/). “For now, Philly still holds out hope that the 31-year-Embiid can finally recover after getting shut down the last seven weeks of the regular season to have his meniscus repaired.”

Embiid’s health has been a recurring concern throughout his career, and he has played in just 58 regular-season games over the past two seasons due mainly to lingering left knee issues. The 2023 NBA MVP is under contract through the 2028-29 season, when he holds a $67.2 million player option.
Despite some successful regular seasons with Embiid, the team hasn’t reached the Eastern Conference finals since 2001, raising questions about his long-term future in Philadelphia.
The Sixers signed George to a four-year, $211.6 million deal last summer, carrying high expectations. With Embiid, George and Maxey all set to make at least $37.9 million next season, the team has mostly filled out its roster with cost-effective deals.
With no major offseason additions besides Edgecombe so far, Philadelphia’s middle-of-the-pack offseason ranking is largely due to luck in the NBA Draft, as the club’s pick would have gone to the Oklahoma City Thunder if it had fallen outside the top six. While the Sixers added a promising young talent alongside Embiid, George, Maxey and McCain, their success will ultimately hinge on availability.
