Jose Mourinho is set to take a punt on the West Ham midfielder with a season-long loan spell in the offing.
West Ham midfielder Edson Alvarez is set to join Fenerbahce on a season-long loan deal with the 27-year-old not deemed to be part of Graham Potter’s plans at the London Stadium this summer.
The Hammers paid £35 million to sign the Mexico international from Ajax in 2023 with David Moyes looking for a Declan Rice replacement at the time. Alvarez has made 73 appearances for the club since arriving in London but was an unused substitute against Sunderland last weekend.
talkSPORT claims that Turkish outfit Fenerbahce are ‘set to sign’ Alvarez on a loan deal as the club looks to secure a place in the league phase of this season’s Champions League. Mourinho’s side are to face Benfica in the play-off round having overcome Feyenoord.
West Ham midfielder set for Fenerbahce loan
West Ham remain in the market for midfield additions this summer with Potter lacking options in the centre of the park. James Ward-Prowse has returned to the first team frame under the former Chelsea manager following his brief Nottingham Forest loan while Freddie Potts was named in the starting XI against Sunderland following his loan to Portsmouth.
Lucas Paqueta is still linked with a move away from the club with Carlos Soler having returned to Paris Saint-Germain following the expiry of his loan deal. Nonetheless, it does not appear that Alvarez is considered a part of Potter’s plans.
Edson Alvarez endured ‘torrid’ 24/25 campaign
When Julen Lopetegui was in charge last term, the midfielder picked up two silly red cards that changed the result of huge matches for his side. Against Nottingham Forest in November, Alvarez was given his marching orders on the stroke of half time having picked up a second yellow, all but ending the Hammers’ chances of coming back from a 1-0 deficit.
Alvarez also saw red in the Carabao Cup defeat to Liverpool last September. In that match, Lopetegui's side were 3-1 down but had been enjoying a strong period of play following the introduction of Michail Antonio at Anfield. The Hammers had a couple of penalty shouts and should have pulled one back if Max Kilman could have sorted his feet out.
Alvarez's second yellow came for needlessly clattering into Mohamed Salah, who had already played the ball when contact was made. Speaking on Sky Sports, Jamie Carragher slammed the midfielder for doing that.
He said: “West Ham are so close to getting a goal – and they probably deserve a goal in the second half. It’s a really stupid decision when you’re on a yellow card. There are two or three players around Mo Salah, it’s not on his own. It certainly wasn’t last-ditch. It takes the game away from West Ham now with them being down to 10 men.”
In other news, West Ham cancel contract of 23-year-old who recently criticised club's transfer strategy.
