Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United have seen their revised offer for Brentford star Yoane Wissa rejected.
Newcastle United are keen on acquiring the services of Yoane Wissa as they look to reinforce their attack before the end of the transfer window. After their initial bid was turned down, the Magpies returned with an improved offer to strike a deal with Brentford.
But, according to a report from The Athletic, the Tyneside club’s £40 million package has been rejected by the Bees, with the proposal consisting of £35 million up front and £5 million in difficult-to-achieve add-ons.
Wissa joined Brentford back in 2021 from French side Lorient. While he has had to work his way into the team, he has been one of their standout performers in recent seasons. Last season, the 28-year-old was involved in 39 matches, and he finished with 20 goals and five assists.
His exceptional performances have put him on the wishlist of multiple top clubs in England. While he only has a year left on his current contract, the Bees do have an option to extend it by another year.
Having lost manager Thomas Frank, star forward Bryan Mbuemo and skipper Christian Norgaard to rival clubs, Brentford are reluctant to sell Wissa this summer and have already turned down multiple offers.
However, the player is keen on taking the next step in his career. He has missed pre-season and wasn’t even a part of their opening Premier League fixture, which suggests he could well be on his way out before the end of the transfer window.
Newcastle fail with another bid for Wissa
Newcastle United are the most serious suitors at this stage. They initially had a £25 million proposal rejected by the Bees. The Magpies are desperate to sign the 28-year-old, having missed out on a number of top striker targets.
With Callum Wilson no longer at the club and Alexander Isak pushing for a move away, Eddie Howe is desperate to have a new number nine, and Wissa is their priority target at this stage.
The Magpies returned with a revised offer. They are ready to pay £35 million up front and another £5 million in add-ons. But even this offer has been turned down by Brentford, who haven’t provided a target price to any team.
While it is a massive blow for the Tyneside club, Wissa is keen on making the move to St James’ Park; as a result, it will be interesting to see if they make another attempt before the end of the window.
