So far, Patrick Mahomes has played a grand total of two snaps in the preseason. He’s not injured or anything, but unlike in previous years, the Kansas City Chiefs are being more cautious with their superstar quarterback.
However, with just one preseason game left and three weeks until the season opener, head coach Andy Reid wants Mahomes and the starters to ramp things up.
“Yeah, there’s just a little bit longer wait here in between this game and the next game,” Reid said, per Charles Goldman of AtoZ Sports. “And so, I just think I’d rather give the guys a little bit more time in this game so the timing keeps a little closer to when we get to our game.”
Mahomes and the Chiefs will close out their preseason at home against the Chicago Bears, and facing that tough defense will be a solid challenge for the starting offense, even if it’s just for limited snaps.
The Chiefs Will Have Seven Inactive Players Due to Injuries
The Chiefs will also hold out seven of their players as they continue to deal with injuries. Per coach Reid, TE Jake Briningstool (hamstring), CB Nazeeh Johnson (shoulder), OT Ethan Driskell (appendectomy), DT Omarr Norman-Lott (ankle), LB Jack Cochrane (bone bruise), S Mike Edwards (hamstring), and WR Jalen Royals (knee tendonitis) won’t be available.
Star WR Marquise ‘Hollywood’ Brown’s status is still up in the air, as he’s dealing with foot and ankle injuries. Given his history of injuries, they’d be wise to err on the side of caution with him:
“I’m going to just play that by ear,” Reid said of Brown. “I’m going to see how it does through warm-ups and all that. We’ll just kind of go from there. This is day by day right there. I want no steps backward on that.
The Chiefs will kick off their season on Friday, Sep. 5, with a road date with the Los Angeles Chargers.
