Newcastle United’s current situation would be very different had Benjamin Sesko chosen them ahead of Manchester United.
The Slovenian striker was Newcastle United’s top target at the beginning of August. There was talk of him becoming Newcastle’s most expensive player ever, while his arrival at St James’ Park would have opened the door for Alexander Isak to leave.
Alas, Sesko joined Manchester United instead. He decided to take his talents to Old Trafford, with the Red Devils paying an initial £66million for Sesko. All the while, Isak looks set to stay at Newcastle.
It was another sliding doors moment during the 2025 summer transfer window, and Toon supporters will be keeping a close eye on how the 22-year-old performs in the Premier League.

Jamie Carragher is ‘not sure’ if Benjamin Sesko will succeed at Manchester United
Jamie Carragher’s latest comments on Sesko will be very interesting to Newcastle United fans, as he is not sure whether or not the striker will be a success under Ruben Amorim.
The former Liverpool defender discussed Sesko on the latest episode the Stick To Football podcast alongside Gary Neville, Ian Wright, Roy Keane and Jill Scott.
“I’m not sure [whether he will be a success],” he said.
“Not just because of him. I think he’s better than Hojlund, but there’s so much focus on [Man] United.

“So many young players there have failed because of the size and the magnitude of the club.
“We’re talking about finishing seventh as being a good season. You’re still going to lose a lot of games.”
Neville added: “Do you know what I like about him? He scores all different types of goals.”
What Benjamin Sesko said about joining Manchester United over Newcastle United
Newcastle United are a club that has been on the up ever since PIF’s arrival. There has been clear progression and scope for more. Players have improved under Eddie Howe, taking their games to new heights.
That is why it was difficult for Toon fans to understand why Sesko wanted to go to Manchester United instead, a club that has seriously struggled in recent years and have become a shadow of their former selves.
During his first interview as a Man United player, Sesko spoke about the history of Man United and their project.
“The history of Manchester United is obviously very special but what really excites me is the future,” he said.
“When we discussed the project, it was clear that everything is in place for this team to continue to grow and compete for the biggest trophies again soon.”
In terms of projects, Newcastle’s is surely in a better place than Man United’s. Chaos has reigned supreme at Old Trafford as of late, while the Magpies fly past them.
But when it comes to history, Manchester United are a long way ahead. Newcastle United fans are not under any illusions when it comes to that fact.
That history helped inspire Sesko to move to the North West rather than the North East, and only time will tell if he made the right decision.
