New Boston Celtics Owner Issues Tough Challenge to Joe Mazzulla

The Boston Celtics have officially entered a new regime, as Wyc Grousbeck officially completed a sale of the team to Bill Chisholm earlier this week.

It has many wondering what will be in store for the Celtics' future and whether or not Chisholm will be as much of an aggressive spender as Grousbeck, who delivered a pair of NBA championships to Boston throughout his ownership tenure.

Chisholm's first order of business as new owner was to extend head coach Joe Mazzulla, signing him to a multi-year contract.

Mazzulla has been somewhat of a polarizing figure in Beantown. He was heavily criticized for the Celtics' playoff flameout in 2023, but was largely revered for leading the team to a title the following season.

Things will be a bit different for Mazzulla during the 2025-26 campaign, though, as Boston will be without Jayson Tatum — who is recovering from a torn Achilles — and will have a much thinner roster in general after subtracting a handful of key pieces this offseason, including Kristaps Porzingis, Jrue Holiday and Al Horford.

Well, Chisholm has already issued a challenge to Mazzulla in that regard.

"I'm really excited to see what he does in this kind of environment," Chisholm said, via Adam Himmelsbach of The Boston Globe. "I think people will really appreciate what he's all about. When he doesn't have the loaded team, what can he do? And I think that's going to be really interesting, and I have every confidence he's going to crush it."

Essentially, is Mazzulla actually a good coach? Or did he just strongly benefit from having one of the most loaded rosters the NBA has seen in quite some time?

We are definitely about to find out. Outside of Jaylen Brown, Derrick White and maybe Payton Pritchard, there isn't a whole lot to be excited about on the Celtics' roster heading into next season.

If Mazzulla is able to take this Boston squad to the playoffs, it would say a whole lot about his coaching acumen, and it would certainly impress Chisholm.
