"Still a chance" - Man United tipped to compete for stunning late transfer

Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma could reportedly still join Manchester United before this summer's transfer window closes for business.

Donnarumma has lost his spot as PSG's number one to Lucas Chevalier, and the Italy international will leave Luis Enrique's team before the end of the current market.

The 26-year-old is believed to be keen to make the move to the Premier League, with Manchester City firmly at the head of the queue for his services.

Ederson is currently being heavily linked with a move away from Man City, and a departure for the Brazilian would open the door for an official offer for Donnarumma to be submitted.

Man United, though, are also considering signing a new goalkeeper, as neither Andre Onana nor Altay Bayindir have convinced for the Red Devils during their two seasons at the club.

Man United 'still in the running' for Donnarumma

Bayindir was given the nod between the sticks against Arsenal on Sunday afternoon, as Onana missed Man United's pre-season fixtures due to a hamstring issue.

Head coach Ruben Amorim now has a major decision to make for this weekend's clash with Fulham, as Bayindir made an error which led to Arsenal scoring the only goal of the match.

The Red Devils will need to move a goalkeeper on in order to bring one in this summer, but it has been claimed that the club are still considering Donnarumma despite recent reports suggesting that a deal is highly unlikely.

"Manchester United need a new goalkeeper if they are to have any realistic hopes of finishing in the top six. Donnarumma is a world-class keeper, and I understand there’s still a chance he could end up in Manchester….on the red side of the city," former footballer Jan Age Fjortoft, who now works in the media, wrote on his X account.

"The challenge for United, though, is that they’ll need to move at least one goalkeeper out before that becomes possible."

Should Man United move for Donnarumma?

Man United were excellent against Arsenal on Sunday in their Premier League opener, with that performance suggesting that it will be a much more positive season for the club.

However, there is no getting away from the fact that the Red Devils are lacking a genuinely world-class goalkeeper, and the fact that Donnarumma is available this summer means that the club simply must act.

Either Onana or Bayindir could leave Old Trafford before the end of the transfer window, which would, in theory, open up space for Donnarumma to arrive, and the Italian is the dominant goalkeeper that the 20-time English champions require between the sticks.
