“Had the courage”- Pep Guardiola praises former Tottenham boss who ‘breaking the barrier’ at N17

Tottenham won the UEL against all odds under Ange Postecoglou despite enduring an injury crisis

Tottenham managed to do the unthinkable last season after beating all odds and winning the Europa League. The Lilywhites had an outside chance to go all the way in the competition and still managed to win it and end their long-standing trophy drought. Their run in Europe was a complete contrast to how the North London club were performing in the Premier League.

Ange’s men could not figure out a way to carve out positive results in the league. They managed to record 22 losses along the way, finishing the campaign just a place above the relegation zone. It is fair to say that the performance levels were nowhere near what was expected from the team, and Spurs were lucky that the teams below them were not picking up points.

Tottenham won the UEL against all odds under Ange Postecoglou despite enduring an injury crisis.

Ex-Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou managed to defy all odd and win the UEL last season.

However, the Premier League form did not matter at all after a point as Ange Postecoglou shifted his full focus on the Europa League. And it is fair to say that the Australian tactician managed to make it count by becoming the first Spurs manager to win a European trophy in 71 years.

Ange Postecoglou brought the winning culture back at Tottenham

Winning the Europa League was not enough for Ange Postecoglou to save his job at N17. And the ex-Celtic boss was sacked by Daniel Levy just a few days after the heroics in Bilbao. However, Big Ange did manage to build a winning a culture at the North London club for his successor Thomas Frank. And the newly appointed Spurs manager has often said that he aims to build on the foundations set by Ange Postecoglou.

Now, Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has also lauded Big Ange’s efforts to change the ‘mentality’ at N17. Speaking to Stan Sports (via TBR Football), Guardiola said,

“Ange’s teams always had that courage to do it. After what happened at Spurs, the injuries they had, the situation, I don’t know, I wasn’t there.”

The legendary manager added,

“It wasn’t a good season, but at the end they won silverware and maybe that helps to break that, break that barrier and maybe that can help in the future for Spurs, mentality wise. In the end he leaves something for the club, for the players, for the future.”

Pep Guardiola suggested that Ange Postecoglou always had the ‘courage’ to set up his team to attack despite the injury crisis at the club. The Man City boss admitted that the Lilywhites endured a rough campaign last season under Big Ange. But Guardiola believes that winning the Europa League helped break the ‘mental barrier’ at N17 that would only benefit the club in the future. And the legendary manager credited Big Ange for that.

Now, Thomas Frank has the chance to build on the Europa League success of last season and bring some more silverware to N17. The Danish tactician has already reiterated that he wants Spurs to ‘become serial winners’ during his tenure. It is easier said than done, and the ex-Brentford boss will hope that his players possess the same winning mentality as him.
