‘No-brainer’ – Leeds United man has say on exit to EFL club

Hull City loanee Joe Gelhardt has said it was a ‘no-brainer’ to return from Leeds United.

Hull City agreed to land the attacker on a season-long loan deal earlier this month. HCAFC had him on a temporary basis for the second-half of last season and he helped them preserve their Championship status.

Gelhardt, 23, joined up with the Tigers in the last January transfer window until the end of the campaign under former boss Ruben Selles, who is now at Sheffield United. He scored five goals in 20 games in all competitions as they avoided relegation to League One on the final day.

After re-joining the East Yorkshire outfit, he has said, as per a report by HullLive: “I’m buzzing (to be back). I wanted to come back here straight away as soon as the season ended. With how much I enjoyed it here last year, it was a no-brainer for me, and I told my agent from the get-go that I wanted to come back here.”

He added: “I think I had a few (offers), but as soon as my agent brought them up, I honestly just said no, I just want Hull again, so just try your best to make that happen, and he did so, to his credit.”

Hull City latest regarding Joe Gelhardt

Hull City brought back Gelhardt to boost their attacking department. Luring him back was a statement of intent by HCAFC.

The ex-England youth international faces an uncertain long-term future at Leeds United with his contract up in 2026. He is unlikely to break into their first-team in the Premier League.

Gelhardt joined the Whites back in 2020 after catching the eye at Wigan Athletic. He has since played 57 games for his current club and has chipped in with three goals, as well as having a temporary stint away at Sunderland.

What now for Hull City?

Hull City are back in action this weekend with a home clash against Blackburn Rovers. HCAFC will be looking to keep their momentum going.

They have four points on the board from their first two outings. They drew 0-0 away at Coventry City before they beat Oxford United 3-2 on their own patch last time out.

The Tigers turned to Sergej Jakirovic as their head coach in June after they sacked Selles. The 48-year-old has managed the likes of Rijeka, Dynamo Zagreb and Kayserispor in the past.

Getting Gelhardt again was a shrewd bit of business by the East Yorkshire outfit. He can play in a few different positions at the top end of the pitch and showed last term he knows where the back of the net is.
