West Ham don’t have long if they want to improve their squad this summer.

The transfer window is set to close on 1 September, giving the Hammers just over a week to bring in new signings.

After West Ham’s 3-0 defeat to Sunderland, it is clear that new additions are needed, and head of recruitment, Kyle Macaulay, is running out of time to make this happen.

Now, David Sullivan will be furious with Macaulay given the latest news emerging for the London Stadium.

Southampton set to reject improved Mateus Fernandes bid

West Ham have been linked with Mateus Fernandes for some time.

The Southampton midfielder was one of the Saints’ few bright sparks in an otherwise awful 2024/25 campaign.

Therefore, Graham Potter is keen to land the 21-year-old to improve his squad.

According to The Sun, page 47 on 21 August, after seeing a £30million bid rejected, the Hammers are now set to make another offer for Fernandes.

Fernandes was signed by Southampton in 2024

Fernandes has already played three times this campaign, scoring once

However, the report claims that this will also be rebuffed by the Championship side.

Given this, it is ridiculous that Macaulay is still pursuing Fernandes.

West Ham simply do not have time to go after the Portuguese star, and submitting a bid that will knowingly be rejected is daft.

Sullivan will rightly be furious with this, as the Hammers could be focusing on targets that could actually sign instead of wasting everyone’s time.

West Ham to sign Marc Casado?

With the addition of Fernandes now looking unlikely, West Ham may look to prioritise Marc Casado.

The Barcelona star was a regular in the squad last season until a ligament injury in March.

West Ham have already bid for Casado this summer, and Barcelona would not stand in Casado’s way if he were to accept a move away.

Therefore, if Potter wants a new midfielder, the 21-year-old may be the Hammers’ best opportunity.
