Newcastle United get Yoane Wissa boost after transfer drama away from St James' Park - opinion

This has been a chaotic transfer window for Newcastle United, though they could now have been handed a boost amid drama involving Eberechi Eze, Tottenham and Arsenal.

Indeed, Tottenham have been pushing to sign Eze after losing James Maddison to injury.

The Daily Mail even suggested that Spurs were ready to include Richarlison in the deal to sign the Crystal Palace forward, which may then have opened up another gap in Thomas Frank’s squad.

Spurs wanted to sign Yoane Wissa and the report claimed that Brentford may prefer to sell to their London rivals due to their long-standing relationship with Frank.

That potential plan, however, hit a huge complication on Wednesday night and Newcastle stand to benefit.

Arsenal hijack Tottenham move for Eberechi Eze

According to Ben Jacobs on social media platform X, Arsenal have hijacked the Eze deal.

Spurs reached an agreement in principle with Palace for the England international and it looked as if he was set to join Frank’s side.

The Gunners, however, dramatically stepped in following an injury to Kai Havertz.

Mikel Arteta’s side are now expected to sign Eze later this week after agreeing to pay an initial £60million plus add-ons.

Naturally, that means Richarlison is unlikely to head to Palace as a result. In turn, that may leave Tottenham’s plans to sign Wissa in doubt. That has to be a boost for Newcastle, who remain keen to sign a striker.

The interesting reason why Yoane Wissa wants to join Newcastle United

According to Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie on social media platform X, Spurs would only be able to sign Wissa if they sell one of their current strikers.

With their Richarlison plan thrown into chaos, it seems like a move to sign Wissa is now off the table.

Later on Wednesday evening, Downie shared some more insight into the Brentford star’s thinking. Wissa is desperate to sign for Newcastle, though the impasse with the London club continues.

On Wednesday, Brentford rejected Newcastle’s £40million bid for Wissa.

The DR Congo international, who was born in France, values Newcastle’s history with French-African players. Demba Ba, Papiss Cisse and Hatem Ben Arfa have all flourished on Tyneside.

Wissa is also said to have eyes on Newcastle’s iconic Number 9 shirt, which was vacated following Callum Wilson’s exit earlier this summer.
