That move by the centre-back on Wednesday prompted many supporters to predict that Fofana had therefore been told he was not part of Maresca’s plans and might be sold.

However, the Chelsea boss allayed fears of any unrest for Fofana, who has had an injury-plagued time at the club since his signing from Leicester City for up to £75million in August 2022.

The French defender was on the bench against Crystal Palace on Sunday and could make his competitive return for the first time since March if he features at the London Stadium against West Ham on Friday night.

“I spoke with Wes yesterday,” said Maresca, who appeared not to have known about the Fofana Instagram situation when asked about it.

“He is very, very happy,” he added. “First of all because he is back from injury. He is joining all the sessions with us. He is very happy.

“He was on the bench against Palace. From tomorrow, he is also with us and he can also get some minutes. He is happy and we are happy. On Instagram, I don’t have any idea.”

Fofana suffered online abuse following his decision to remove Chelsea references from his Instagram account, some of it of a racist nature.

“As I said in this moment, Wes is happy,” Maresca continued.

“There is nothing to add on that. If there was abuse on Instagram, it’s never good for any human being in the world. But it is something that we cannot control.”
