CLEVELAND, OHIO (TheOBR.com) - Good morning, Cleveland Browns fans! Here's a friendly reminder that the old list of links to other sites' latest articles can now be found via the OBR Daily News Ticker, a rolling list of articles updated throughout the day, presented without my usual stupid comments. I'm looking for a way to integrate my stupid comments, of course, but fortunately for everyone, I haven't figured out how to do it yet.
Moving this content to a separate article makes this atrocity more confusing. While I figure all this out, though, I'll continue to refer to it as the OBR Daily Newswire, nonetheless. A title, if you will, devoid of my trademark vapidity.
THE DAILY BLOVIATION
Like the Newswire itself, I am in an ill-defined netherworld.
Unique among the OBR staff, I lack in-depth football knowledge, classic journalistic training, or anything else of actual value. So, I busy myself with the mechanics of operating a website, building extraneous gadgets, handling back-office chores, and occasionally bloviating my opinions about football to an interested audience of virtually dozens of people.
So, what does this make me? Journalist? Fan? Commentator? Janitor? I use the sobriquet "webdork" to describe all this, but in reality, I'm just a guy running amok, publishing a website every day. I'm not sure what I do, but I know that I'm quite busy doing it.
This is relevant today because my various roles do not adequately prepare me for handling a story like Myles Garrett's appearance before the media yesterday, where he refused to answer questions about his penchant for driving fast cars at high velocity.
On one hand, like a beat writer, I'd like Myles to provide me with an easy headline with his responses, because easy headlines make my life simple. On the other hand, as a football commentator, I'm supposed to have an opinion about Myles Garrett driving around Cleveland like an absolute knucklehead, endangering his life and others, three years after he said he had "a wake-up call" about doing such things.
As a media observer, I would say something about Garrett getting five questions about this after it was clear that he wasn't going to talk about it.
As a fan, I'd just like Myles to slow the hell down and focus on giving other teams' quarterbacks nightmares like he was put on Earth to do. And I feel a little silly writing about it at all, preferring, as Myles says, to "focus on football". After all, I may have occasionally exceeded posted speed limits or stretched the meaning of that yellow light in between the green and red ones.
Why can't all these things be true?
And why can't I be a little upset that Garrett took took a step back from leadership and accountabillity in facing questions from the media, talking nonsense about "keeping his personal life personal", when his actions and threat of injury impacts his team, the fanbase, and the fortune of an organization worth, I don't know, 15 gagillion dollars or something.
Garrett has done some good in the community, and his backpack project is wonderful. It was highlighted in this space a couple of days ago. But there's more to being a public person than just highlighting the positive. You have to answer for the negative.
Perhaps Garrett was embarrassed about backtracking on his promise to be more careful on the local roadways and didn't want to discuss it. If so, that's fine. He can say that and would find fans understanding. As it stands, it appears that he doesn't care about the reckless behavior, dismissing it as part of his personal life, much like a decision about what to eat for dinner.

It's not. Driving 100 miles per hour on one of the state's most dangerous highways isn't smart. It isn't a good example, and it's risky to a lot that fans care about.
So, per usual, I'm all over the map on this. But there's one thing I can say with clarity and confidence: Slow the hell down, Myles. It's not just about you, it's about all the fans and people who depend on you.
And that, I guess, is what Myles should be embarrassed about. A sign of maturity is putting the needs of others before your own need for excitement. Myles needs to get there.
Have a good one! GO BROWNS!
