Exclusive: How David Moyes really feels about young Everton star as Derby County and Preston show interest

The pursuit of Harrison Armstrong this summer has been one that Derby County supporters have been tracking eagerly.

At just 19, the teenager was instrumental in helping the Rams avoid relegation to League One last season, and seeing the midfielder return to Pride Park is a desire of many.

Armstrong himself made no secret of his admiration for Derby back in May, and stated that he would be open to coming back to the club if allowed. However, those strong performances mean interest from elsewhere has arisen.

Now, EFL Analysis can explain Everton’s position regarding their starlet and the chances that Derby and other Championship clubs have of signing him before the transfer window comes to a close.

He said: “Harrison Armstrong is an outstanding young player. He was brilliant for Derby last season. I’m told there’s a huge amount of interest in Derby wanting him back, but Preston do like him, and there’s a whole host of others in the Championship. Half the league would like him.

“The real issue though is that Everton’s squad is so small, he was on the bench on Monday and as it stands now, he’s not a million miles off their starting XI. I think in an ideal world, he would go out on loan, but I do think Moyes is seriously considering keeping him at least until January.

“I think unless Everton get three or four in, numbers-wise, he probably has to stay. I don’t think he necessarily needs to go out. I’d be very surprised if he went to Preston. Obviously there’s the first-team football element, but the top teams in the Championship are more likely if he does go before deadline day.”

The Rams may not have space for Harrison Armstrong

One problem that the Rams may have compared to other sides in the division is the fact that they are relatively stacked already in midfield.

Lewis Travis is a major target for Eustace, and if the Blackburn Rovers man does make his way to the East Midlands in the next few days then Armstrong may not be needed.

Obviously a player of his talent will always be welcomed back at Pride Park, but the Rams have to be realistic – especially with two new wingers still needed.

A move in January could potentially be the way to go about a return for Armstrong if he is required, but this could be his opportunity to establish himself as a first-teamer at Everton.
