Man City midfielder ‘could leave’ before deadline amid ‘numerous top-level enquiries’

Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan could leave the Etihad Stadium before the summer transfer window closes on September 1, according to a report.

The 34-year-old affirmed that he is more than happy to remain with the Citizens for the 2025-26 season after an automatic one-year contract extension was triggered earlier this summer.

However, speculation over his future on the blue side of Manchester remains rife, with manager Pep Guardiola still keen to trim his squad that is “not healthy”.

Gundogan was strongly linked with a move to Galatasaray last month and the midfielder has refused to rule out the possibility of finishing his career at his boyhood club.

The retired Germany international, who was born in Gelsenkirchen but grew up with Turkish parents in a household full of Galatasaray supporters, had **allegedly reached a contractual agreement**with the Super Lig champions.

Galatasaray head coach Okan Buruk responded to those reports at the end of July and suggested that the midfielder is more likely to stay at Man City this summer, but there could yet be a fresh twist in the remaining days of the transfer window.

Gundogan could join ‘top-level’ club before transfer deadline

According to ***Sky Deutschland***reporter Florian Plettenberg, Gundogan’s future is ‘one to watch’ until deadline day and the midfielder could leave Man City in the ‘coming days’.

Plettenberg adds that Gundogan has received ‘numerous top-level enquiries’ from clubs across the world, but a final decision over his future is yet to be made.

Should Gundogan depart, Guardiola would be losing one of his favourite and most trusted players who has earned legendary status at Man City across two spells at the club, winning 14 trophies and making 358 appearances across all competitions since first joining the Citizens in 2016.

The five-time Premier League winner captained Man City to a historic treble in 2022-23, lifting their first ever Champions League title, and after a challenging year-long experience at Barcelona in 2023-24, Gundogan returned to Guardiola’s side and played 50 times in all tournaments last season.

Gundogan, who scored two goals in four games at the FIFA Club World Cup earlier this summer, is not the only experienced Man City player facing an uncertain future at the Etihad, as Ederson, Manuel Akanji and Nathan Ake are among those would have also been tipped to leave.

Both Ederson and Akanji are said to be attracting interest from Galatasaray, while Ake has allegedly emerged as a target for Premier League side Everton.
