Man Utd target Zion Suzuki reflects on transfer decision, 'I'm really happy with my choice...'

Manchester United were heavily linked with a move for Japanese goalkeeper Zion Suzuki before he completed his 2024 transfer to Parma.

There have been question marks over Andre Onana’s future at Manchester United following two difficult seasons at Old Trafford.

Matters were made worse last weekend when a howler from back-up goalkeeper Altay Bayindir led to United losing 1-0 against Arsenal.

United have been linked with multiple goalkeepers this summer, including Emiliano Martinez and Senne Lammens.

It remains to be seen whether Ruben Amorim will get a new goalkeeper through the door before the transfer window shuts.

Man Utd target Zion Suzuki happy with Parma move

Last month, United In Focus revealed a list of four potential Onana replacements being considered by United’s recruitment team.

The list includes Parma stopper Zion Suzuki, who was previously linked with a move to United when Erik ten Hag was manager.

It is understood that United remain admirers of the Japanese stopper.

However, a year on from his move to Europe, Suzuki has recently commented on his decision to sign for Parma after being linked with bigger clubs.

Suzuki is now renowned as one of the top young goalkeepers in Europe, after impressing in Serie A.

When asked about rumours linking him with other clubs, Suzuki told Tuttomercatoweb: “I know there were a lot of rumors about me, but I’m totally focused on Parma and preparing to start the season well. Parma made me a fantastic offer, so I immediately decided to accept and join this club. Last year was an opportunity to grow, and I’m really happy with my choice.”

Referring to his first season in Italy, he added: “In the end, we achieved our goal, which was to stay in Serie A. I’ve grown a lot, and it was a good season. It taught me the importance of preparation, because only if you train well and in a certain way can you perform well. First of all, I want to reduce the number of goals conceded, because last season we conceded a lot. That’s my first personal goal, then as a team, we want to raise the bar and not just fight for survival.”

Man Utd goalkeeper options for 2025/26 season

Although United have three options to select from between the sticks, United fans remain wary about the quality of their goalkeepers.

Onana is set to remain first choice after proving to be error-prone in his first two seasons at the club.

Meanwhile, Bayindir will provide back-up along with Tom Heaton as the third choice option.
