La Liga UCL club agree record deal to sign 22-year-old Chelsea utility man

Villarreal have reportedly agreed a club-record €29.5 million deal with Chelsea for their defensive sensation Renato Veiga.

According to an update by reputed Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Renato Veiga is set to join La Liga outfit Villarreal, with the Spanish club reaching an agreement to secure his services. They have agreed a €29.5 million package with Chelsea, which also includes a significant sell-on clause.

On the back of an impressive season with FC Basel, Chelsea signed Veiga last summer. The youngster was involved in a total of 18 games in the first half of the season, but he could not cement his spot in Enzo Maresca’s plans.

The East London outfit ended up sending him out on loan to Juventus for the second half of the campaign. The versatile defender was involved in a total of 15 matches for the Old Lady. While he did have a few impressive performances during his loan stint, it was not enough to convince the Turin-based outfit to sign him permanently.

The Portuguese international returned to his parent club, where his contract runs until 2031. However, since he is not an important part of Maresca’s plans, the Blues have been keen on cashing in on him. The London club are looking to offload a number of players before the deadline, and Veiga is one of them.

Villarreal win race for Veiga

The 22-year-old has attracted a lot of interest from across Europe. Villarreal, by far, have been the most serious suitor. Having secured a UEFA Champions League spot with a fifth-placed finish last time out, the Yellow Submarine are now looking to build on it.

Marcelino Garcia Toral seeks more quality at the back, and he believes the versatile Veiga could do wonders for them. After long-drawn negotiations, Villarreal finally have an agreement in place with both the player and Chelsea.

Both parties have agreed on a €29.5 million package that also includes a heavy sell-on clause. Veiga is all set to be the costliest player in the club’s history. Villarreal will be paying €25 million up front, while the remaining €4.5 million will be in add-ons.

The Portuguese international is scheduled to undergo a medical at his new club on Thursday, after which an official announcement of the record-breaking deal is expected.
