Liverpool would prefer not to sell 'special' player but he's now pushing to leave - journalist

Liverpool have had a massive clear-out of their ranks this summer, with players such as Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez being shown the exit door.

It’s clear that Arne Slot wanted to rebuild his team this summer, with the Reds’ attack being the main area of the team that has changed.

Last term, Liverpool were overly reliant on Mohamed Salah, and with the Egyptian King set to miss a decent chunk of the 2025-26 season due to AFCON, they need other outlets to ensure they continue winning games.

This is one of the main reasons why so much money has been spent on Liverpool’s attack, with the likes of Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike being put straight into the starting XI.

However, if the latest rumours to emerge from Anfield are true, Slot could be about to make a rather big decision on the future of one of his players.

Liverpool would prefer to keep Harvey Elliott this summer

When the summer transfer window first opened, many expected Harvey Elliott to be one of the first players to exit Anfield.

The young midfielder played a starring role in England’s Under-21 Euro-winning team, with the playmaker being Lee Carsley’s player of the tournament.

However, since players such as Wirtz and Dominik Szoboszlai already occupy Elliott’s preferred position of attacking midfield, there isn’t a clear path into the first team for him.

But, as per a fresh report from journalist Ben Jacobs via his personal X account, the Reds have seemingly decided on his future.

“Liverpool’s preference is to keep Harvey Elliott. Leipzig still working on a deal, but nothing agreed club-to-club as of Thursday morning,” he wrote.

“At the right price, Liverpool will reluctantly sanction a sale due to understanding Elliott’s desire to start every week. Yet Elliott staying would be welcomed by Liverpool as he remains a valued squad player.”

Liverpool keeping Harvey Elliott could save them millions this summer

There’s no hiding from the fact that Elliott is a more than impressive player.

The Englishman has been in and around Liverpool’s first-team squad ever since he was brought in by Jurgen Klopp as a 16-year-old.

And, while he has had some questionable moments throughout his time at Anfield, his performances at the Under-21 Euros proved that there’s a top-quality player within him.

Indeed, Szoboszlai and Wirtz are occupying Liverpool’s number 10 spot at the moment, but with the Reds still needing an attacker this summer, Elliott could be used on the right wing instead.

Of course, Federico Chiesa is Liverpool’s back-up at the moment, but if Alexander Isak doesn’t end up joining, the Italian may have to move into a more central role.

Only time will tell what the future has in store, but on paper, it feels like keeping Elliott within Slot’s ranks this summer makes a lot of sense, especially since Neil Mellor dubbed the midfielder a “special talent.”
