Liverpool issue official response to £150m Newcastle United transfer saga

Arne Slot was speaking ahead of Newcastle United vs Liverpool at St James’ Park this weekend.

Arne Slot has stayed coy on the Alexander Isak transfer saga - but vowed Liverpool are ready to strike if the right player becomes available.

As it stands, the Swede continues to down tools on Tyneside as he pursues a St James’ Park exit. Isak is still training alone at Benton having not kicked a ball for Newcastle United since March.

Earlier this week, the 25-year-old went public for the first time since making his intention clear to leave the club. In an explosive Instagram statement, Isak accused Newcastle of breaking promises - without mentioning specific details.

The striker also insisted “the relationship cannot continue” and how a transfer remains “the best” outcome for all parties. However, fiercely retaliating just hours later, the Magpies rejected any suggestion that they told Isak he could leave this summer.

The door was left open for Isak to return to the Toon “family” when “he is ready” to join his teammates. Newcastle also “do not foresee” a deal happening as “conditions” - understood to be a suitable replacement or offer - have not been met.

Speaking ahead of what promises to be a captivating encounter at St James’ Park, Liverpool boss Slot deflected questions about the summer’s biggest transfer saga. However, the Dutchman admitted the Reds will pounce if the right player becomes available.

“What I can tell you is not a lot,” he said. “And if somebody else is going to ask that question, it will be the same answer.

“Having two per position is ideal, but I prefer less than more, because you have to disappoint so many players. I’m really happy with the squad but, as always, if we think we can improve and there is a player available that can really make us better, then this club has always shown we can bring these players in.

“But only if it (meets) everything we want). The right transfer fee, the right player, the right position and a player that wants to come to us.”
