Arne Slot reveals Jeremie Frimpong injury blow

Arne Slot has revealed an injury setback for Jeremie Frimpong, with Liverpool set to be without both of their regular right-backs for Monday’s trip to Newcastle.

Frimpong is sidelined with a hamstring injury suffered against Bournemouth and is now expected to miss the next two games at least.

That leaves Liverpool without both of their regular starting right-backs, with Conor Bradley not yet in contention despite briefly making his return to training on Thursday.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference ahead of the first away game of the season at Newcastle, Slot confirmed Frimpong would miss out.

“The medical team was completely right about it, to tell me I had to take him off [against Bournemouth],” he told reporters.

“He’s out until the end of the international break, and that happened in the game.

“I think I got criticised a bit for taking him off, didn’t I? I already said immediately after the game it had nothing to do with how he played.

“We felt he had an issue with the hamstring, the medical staff, and they were completely right.

“Good call to take him off, otherwise he would maybe have been out for longer. We expect him to be back after the international break.”

While Frimpong will miss Netherlands duty, Bradley has already been called up to the Northern Ireland squad for their World Cup qualifiers against Luxembourg and Germany next month.

That suggests there is a confidence 22-year-old will be involved for Liverpool before the international break, with the trip to Newcastle followed by the visit of Arsenal on August 31.

Slot does have other options at right-back, naming Joe Gomez, Wataru Endo and Dominik Szoboszlai as contenders.

However the head coach indicated that Gomez – who missed much of pre-season himself due to an Achilles injury – is not yet capable of playing a full 90 minutes and likely cannot start at St James’ Park on Monday.
