Former Maryland basketball star Jahmir Young signs with a new NBA team

Former Maryland star guard Jahmir Young is getting another shot in the NBA. The Miami Heat announced they have agreed to a deal with Young, giving him the opportunity to compete for a roster spot heading into training camp.

Young spent last season on a two-way contract with the Chicago Bulls, where he quickly proved himself in the G League. Playing for the Windy City Bulls, he was named to the NBA G League All-Rookie Team after an impressive season at point guard. His play earned him a late-season call-up, where he made his NBA debut and appeared in six games for Chicago.

This summer in Las Vegas, Young built on that momentum with a breakout NBA Summer League performance. He erupted for 37 points against the Milwaukee Bucks on 12-of-17 shooting—including 6-of-7 from three—and added three assists, two steals and a rebound in 33 minutes. Taking over in the second half, he led the Bulls to a comeback win and delivered the highest-scoring game by any player in the 2025 Summer League. The performance underscored his ability to create offense at the highest level and raised his profile with scouts across the league.

It was the latest milestone in a steady climb for the Upper Marlboro, Md., native. Young went undrafted in 2024 despite a prolific college career in which he scored 2,270 points across five seasons, ranking among the top 25 scorers in NCAA history. He was a three-time All-Conference USA pick at Charlotte before transferring to Maryland in 2022. In two seasons with the Terps, he averaged 18.0 points, 4.5 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game while shooting 44% from the field and 83% from the line. He earned All-Big Ten honors twice, helped lead Maryland to an NCAA Tournament win over West Virginia in 2023, and became the centerpiece of Kevin Willard's early years in College Park.

Young now joins a Miami organization known for identifying and developing overlooked players. While details of his contract were not disclosed, he is expected to compete for one of the Heat's two-way deals, which would allow him to split time between the NBA roster and their G League affiliate, the Sioux Falls Skyforce.

For Young, the Heat opportunity represents the next step toward establishing himself as a regular on an active NBA roster—a goal that has grown steadily closer with each stage of his career.
