Championship Rivals Submit Bid for Leicester City’s ‘Homegrown Talent’

Over the past few years, Leicester City have consistently utilised their star-studded academy to bolster the first-team squad. Ben Chilwell, Harvey Barnes, and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall have all come through the system and eventually made the step up. One of the more recent talents to make a name for themselves is Kasey McAteer. With the hard-working winger now capped for Ireland and experienced at the level, it comes as no surprise that there is interest elsewhere.

Kasey McAteer Bid Received

As reported by John Percy, Ipswich Town have officially submitted a bid for McAteer. Like Leicester, the Tractor Boys also faced relegation last season, but it always seemed likely due to their meteoric rise from League One to the top flight. Kiernan McKenna’s side have already been busy this summer, as Chuba Akpom, Jens Cajuste and many others have arrived at Portman Road.

Although it is not clear whether the bid has been accepted or not, Percy adds that Ipswich are hopeful of acquiring the 23-year-old. McAteer broke into the City side under Enzo Maresca and managed to tally seven goals. Although these numbers didn’t translate to the Premier League, he has proved to be a versatile option for most squads.

The sale of the “homegrown talent” would add to the array of outgoings this summer, as the Foxes look to rebuild. In addition to this, Bilal El Khannouss and Harry Winks remain options for clubs in the top division, despite featuring in all of City’s first three fixtures.

How Does This Affect Leicester City?

Throughout his time in the first team, McAteer has never necessarily solidified himself as a starter. This is mostly due to the quality of Abdul Fatawu, as the Ghanaian winger kept him out of the side for much of the 23/24 campaign. Likewise, this season, Jeremy Monga seems to have surpassed him in the pecking order, which further suggests a move would be helpful.

Furthermore, the Foxes are also dealing with PSR issues, which would further emphasise the need to sell an academy graduate. With just one arrival under Marti Cifuentes, selling players is key, especially if the club want to be competitive this year. The first three performances suggested there are many issues with the profiles and attitude of some players, who want to leave.

If Ipswich are to complete the deal, they will gain someone who can play as a number eight, full-back or as a winger. He tracks back well and is a real asset when a side is looking to soak up pressure in a low block. Last season, he was in the top 10th percentile for tackles, aerials won and blocks, which further highlights this point. However, technically and in tight spaces, he isn’t fantastic and can often be overwhelmed as a result.
