Newcastle United will have to pay in the region of £60m to bring striker Jorgen Strand Larsen to Tyneside as they look to make a late transfer breakthrough.

Reports in the Midlands suggest the Magpies are keen on a deal to bring the Wolverhampton Wanderers striker to the North East before the September 1 transfer deadline.

However Wolves are reluctant to sell the Norwegian frontman, having just signed him on a permanent deal from Celta Vigo. He Impressed on loan from the Spanish club last season and completed a move said to be worth around £23m.

Wolves could demand three times that much to sell him just weeks later, with time running out for both clubs to find striker replacements.

Newcastle are in dire need of more firepower thanks to Alexander Isak's transfer stance, which means he is currently unavailable for selection.

That, coupled with Callum Wilson's departure on a free transfer after his contract expired, has left the Magpies short of options up front.

Winger Anthony Gordon is expected to once again lead the line against Liverpool on Monday night, with Will Osula an option from the bench.

Newcastle saw an offer worth £40m for Brenttord's Yoane Wissa turned down on Wednesday, but they could yet return with an improved bid.

Strand Larsen is very different type of frontman, of course, and would offer Howe more of a targetman, something which could appeal with the quality United have on the flanks.

Howe has Harvey Barnes, Anthony Elanga and Jacob Murphy competing with Gordon for a starting place in the wide roles, and a strong centre-forward is thought to appeal.

But with strikers at a premium and time running out, pricetags are likely to rise, especially wirh Newcastle's need so well publicised.

The Express and Star report Newcastle will make a push for Strand Larsen in the coming days, with other reports from the West Midlands suggesting the two clubs are around £5m apart on their valuation.
