Newcastle United have learned Liverpool will be without Jeremie Frimpong when those sides meet in the Premier League on Monday night. His injury deepens a full-back injury crisis for the visitors ahead of the match at St James' Park.

Eddie Howe and Arne Slot will go head-to-head in the dugout next week for what is Newcastle's first home fixture of the new campaign. The fixture is hotly anticipated by both sides and neutrals alike because of all that is currently unfolding with the Alexander Isak transfer saga.

Just as the hosts are set to be without their Swedish striker, Liverpool are set to be disadvantaged, too, with their head coach confirming Frimpong, a £29.5m summer signing from Bayer Leverkusen, will be sidelined by a hamstring injury for up over three weeks.

The Dutch international was withdrawn on the hour-mark of the Reds' season opener vs Bournemouth, to which Slot has told reporters at his pre-match press conference: "The medical team was completely right about Jeremie to take him off because he's out until the end of the international break.

"We felt Jeremie had an issue in his hamstring - the medical team did. They were right. A good call from them as otherwise he could have been out for even longer."

This injury worsens an already bad situation for the Premier League champions. Other right-back Conor Bradley has not played since a July 26 pre-season friendly vs AC Milan, when he also sustained a hamstring injury.

Slot confirmed the Northern Irishman had returned to training but only on Thursday morning - just four days before the Magpies clash.

Joe Gomez helped replace Frimpong when he went off injured against Bournemouth, but he too has been nursing a minor issue to full health over pre-season. Therefore Slot suggested alternative ways he will be able to overcome this crisis against Newcastle.

"We only have at the moment two injuries, unfortunately it is two for the same position. But the good thing is some others can play in that position as well," added Liverpool's head coach.

"Wata [Endo] played in that position for a few minutes - Dominik Szoboszlai already played in that position. So, there are other options we can explore.

"Joe Gomez is definitely one of them, but for him to play already 20 minutes, that was already quite a lot.

"I wouldn't say he had a set-back, but he wasn't able to train three days in a row completely with the team."

Meanwhile, Howe could have a full squad bar-Isak available for Liverpool's visit. Midfielder Joe Willock was seen back in training this week following his groin injury picked up in pre-season. He could be backed up by new £43m signing Jacob Ramsey, who could potentially make his Magpies debut.
