Exclusive: Manchester City legend Sergio Aguero offers update on future in football management

**Manchester City legend Sergio Aguero has issued an update on whether he has a future in football management and coaching, speaking exclusively to City Xtra.**

The former striker, who remains the club’s all-time leading goalscorer with 260 goals, has often been asked about the possibility of transitioning into a coaching role since his retirement from professional football in 2021.

Aguero’s iconic status at the Etihad Stadium and close connection with Manchester City supporters has naturally led to gossip over whether he could one day return to the touchline in Manchester in a different capacity.

While many of his former teammates have pursued managerial or coaching careers across Europe – with Vincent Kompany at Bayern Munich and Pablo Zabaleta in Albania’s national team set-up – Aguero has remained largely focused on media, business, and ambassadorial roles.

His growing influence as a streamer and entrepreneur has also added to the impression that his post-playing path may diverge from the traditional route of professional management.

In recent months, there have been broader conversations among City supporters about former players potentially returning to the club in non-playing roles. With Pep Guardiola contracted until 2027, speculation about his eventual successor continues, and some fans have floated names such as Kompany as a potential candidate in the longer term.

However, Aguero has now moved to clarify his current stance on such discussions.

Speaking exclusively to City Xtra on behalf of [Stake.com](https://stake.com/sports/soccer/england/premier-league), Sergio Aguero was quizzed on whether he ever sees himself having a future in football coaching or management and, if so, where that career could start.

“I’ve said so before, I just don’t see myself coaching. There’s quite a lot of preparation that’s necessary, and it’s a very demanding job,” the former Argentina international admitted.

He continued, “Maybe, sometime in the future, I could assist in another function, like management. Remains to be seen, but so far, I’m happy with my current projects.

“And there’s plenty of them! I’m fired up to run them, it’s a lot of work and very gratifying.”

For now, Aguero seems committed to his projects away from the dugout, which include high-profile business ventures, media appearances, and ambassadorial duties with City and other organisations.

Looking ahead, the door does not appear to be fully closed. Aguero’s admission that he might consider a role in “management” rather than day-to-day coaching suggests that future involvement at a boardroom or ambassadorial level with a club could still be on the cards.

City themselves have leaned on former players to support their global football operations and the wider City Football Group, and Aguero could yet add his name to that evolving story, albeit in a different capacity.
