‘Wait a minute’: Lions explain why they continue to test new LB with returners

ALLEN PARK -- When the Detroit Lions signed Grant Stuard, special teams coordinator Dave Fipp naturally started watching the linebacker’s tape.

Stuard was known as a special teams standout through the last couple of stops, so Fipp was looking to see where they could best deploy him. But when Fipp saw Stuard running the ball during his time at the University of Houston, he thought there was something more to explore, leading to the Lions working Stuard at kickoff returner. Stuard played some fullback and linebacker in college, and definitely has a physical burst to his game.
