£30m player who rejected Nottingham Forest is now in limbo six months after transfer

Nottingham Forest have hit the transfer jackpot this summer, but 12 months ago, it proved a frustrating period.

Elliot Anderson was praised by Gary Neville for his efforts last season, and along with Nikola Milenkovic, he proved the most fruitful piece of business from the summer of 2024.

Forest desperately wanted a striker to compete with Chris Wood, with Eddie Nketiah rejecting Forest after talks with Oliver Glasner at Crystal Palace.

The big saga of last summer proved to be the interest in Santiago Gimenez with the player firmly weighing up whether or not to walk away from Feyenoord after helping them to the Champions League.

Gimenez rejected Forest three times before signing for AC Milan in the January window but now it seems that things aren’t going swimmingly for the Mexican at the San Siro.

Santiago Gimenez faces uncertain AC Milan future

It would appear that Milan isn’t proving to be sweetness and light for the striker and Football Italia have suggested that he might make way at the San Siro this summer.

Gimenez checked in with the Serie A giants in January and immediately hit the ground running, scoring against his former club Feyenoord in the Champions League before they eventually knocked Milan out.

In total, he scored six goals and claimed four assists from 20 appearances but that might not be enough to tempt Max Allegri into keeping him, with Gimenez signed by previous boss Paulo Fonseca.

MORE FOREST STORIES

Forest have signed Arnaud Kalimuendo this summer and it feels very unlikely that the club would re-enter the race to land the 24-year-old striker this summer.

Forest fans should lay off Gimenez

Looking at things, Gimenez might now wish he’d said yes to Forest, given that European football will be at the City Ground and not for Milan at the San Siro this season.

However, it’s hard to imagine anyone predicting last summer that Forest would improve 10 league positions and finish seventh, having narrowly avoided relegation the year previous.

With that in mind, Gimenez probably did the right thing and although Milan aren’t in Europe this season, it feels probable that they will return in the near future as one of European football’s top clubs.

Forest have moved on from Gimenez and whilst he wonders what might have been, he will now hope to get hooked up with another club where he will play regular football going forward.
