On August 20, 2025 – London. Chelsea and Manchester United locked in Garnacho transfer standoff. In a story that has already gone on too long and has consumed English football from the front pages of the broadsheets to the tabloids, Chelsea and Manchester United are negotiating a transaction for winger Alejandro Garnacho and, unfortunately, there is substantical difference in their valuation of the player that could thwart the move.
What’s Driving The Negotiation
Manchester United are asking for £50 million for the 21-year-old product, a fee Chelsea don’t consider paying. The Blues value the player closer to £30 million and are looking to use the players lack of relationship with United and head coach Ruben Amorim who hasn’t spoken to Garnacho since taking him out of the first-team squad and not taking him on the pre-season tour, to negotiate a reduced fee.
Where Does the Player Stand
With no career remaining at United, Garnacho, once exiled from first-team training, has already rejected an offer from Bayern Munich and made it clear to the German giants that he isn’t interested in their proposed move after Chelsea contacted Garnacho’s representatives. The player has agreed personal terms with the West London club.
Chelsea’s Strategy
The Blues have communicated to Garnacho to remain patient as they work behind the scenes. The club is confident with United’s weak negotiating position. A player who is not in the manager’s plans and is part of the so-called ‘bomb squad’. He will eventually force them to lower their asking price as the September 1 deadline looms.
The Obstacles
Chelsea’s successful completion of a deal is dependant on one formula. That is if the club is able to sell off attacking players first and foremost. The club needs to sell before they can buy. Christopher Nkunku and Nicolas Jackson needs selling to make space and allow funds for the Garnacho deal. Moreover, a simultaneous run at PSG’s Xavi Simons.
The Road Ahead
The coming days are critical. If Chelsea cannot meet United’s valuation, one of the summer’s most protracted sagas could end in a stalemate. This will leave a talented player in limbo. All eyes are on the boardrooms at Old Trafford and Stamford Bridge.
