Buffalo Bills starting cornerback carted off with injury at practice

Orchard Park, N.Y. — Buffalo Bills starting cornerback Tre’Davious White was injured during 11-on-11 in Thursday’s practice with what appeared to be a lower-body injury.

White needed two teammates to help him hobble off the field before trainers swarmed to assess the injury. The Bills practiced in the stadium, and White was able to walk into the tunnel before disappearing for a few moments. He walked back to the edge of the tunnel before athletic trainers picked him up in a cart to take him back to the locker room.

White has been working as the team’s No. 2 cornerback since he re-signed with the Bills in April. Rookie first-round pick Maxwell Hairston was playing primarily on the second team even before he sustained a knee injury during training camp.

Hairston has recently been able to stop needing crutches to get around and was working off to the side in Wednesday’s practice. He’s wearing a knee brace but was able to do some rope and medicine ball work. The timeline for Hairston’s return is hazy, and the likelihood that he’s ready to step back in and play in less than three weeks against the Baltimore Ravens is extremely low.

White’s injury comes as the Bills wrapped up training camp and begin looking toward the start of the season. Buffalo defensive coordinator Bobby Babich said on Wednesday that he’s seen some strong play from White throughout camp.

"There’s some things with Tre’Davious, like all these guys, that we’ve got to improve on," Babich said. “But there is flashes of that Tre White in there still that we know. So there’s a couple things that we got to make sure that, he ties the bow on. But again, we just want to continue to see him grow here back in the system.”

White has had plenty of injury setbacks in his nine-year NFL career. He tore his ACL in 2021 and then tore his Achilles tendon in 2023. White played for the Los Angeles Rams and Baltimore Ravens last season. He struggled in his return from another injury and was ultimately released by the Rams. The Ravens brought him on shortly after, and he played sparingly down the stretch and in the playoffs.

White’s camp and preseason have been a mixed bag of results. He’s had some solid moments, but he’s also struggled at times in coverage and as a tackler. The Bills are running out of options at cornerback if White misses an extended period. Veterans Dane Jackson and Ja’Marcus Ingram are the next two players on the depth chart. Rookie Dorian Strong is also in the mix, but he’s spent most of the summer on the second and third-team defense.

Bills starting cornerback Christian Benford left practice early on Thursday, but he told reporters that he just needed some rest. The Bills close out the preseason against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on the road Saturday.
