Former Denver Nuggets guard Russell Westbrook is currently a free agent as he awaits a new home.
He was excellent in the Nuggets’ first-round series against the Los Angeles Clippers this postseason, but NBA insider Jake Fischer reported yesterday that despite Westbrook’s recent positive impact, the Sacramento Kings are “the most likely outcome for Russell Westbrook if he’s gonna be in the NBA at all.”
It was shocking news to hear that the former MVP, who once averaged a triple-double four times in five seasons, has no suitors but one. With the Kings having a hard time opening up a roster spot for Westbrook, retirement seemed like his only option.
However, NBA reporter Grant Afseth reported earlier today that Sacramento is “trying very hard” to unload Malik’s Monk’s contract to secure the nine-time All-Star.

The Kings have been linked to Westbrook since the opening stages of free agency and although they have a starting point guard in Dennis Schroeder, they still want Westbrook to be their sixth man.
Many of the triple-double machine’s biggest supporters have opposed a move to Sacramento as they don’t seem equipped to contend for a playoff spot, much less a title. But if they’re the only destination for him, Westbrook will gladly sign a deal there.
He’s shown a willingness in the past to go to seemingly undesirable locations, namely the Washington Wizards, and thrived there. Westbrook’s D.C. stint came on the heels of an abysmal postseason run with the Houston Rockets where he was inefficient and ineffective due to his leg injury.
He then proceeded to average a triple-double in Washington and dragged them to their only playoff appearance in the last seven years. Westbrook’s image and career were revived during his time with the Wizards, so perhaps that’s what he’s planning on doing with Sacramento.
At just 36-years-old, retirement for Westbrook would seem premature, so the Kings are doing everything in their power to sign him.
