“Metchie Szn”: Philadelphia Eagles Fans Hyped for Newcomer’s Role

The Philadelphia Eagles acquired John Metchie III from the Houston Texans on Sunday due to concerns over their receiving corps. When A.J. Brown missed four games in 2024, the offense struggled significantly because of it. The Eagles went 2-2 when Brown did not play and 1-1 when he and DeVonta Smith missed the same game.

Acquiring Metchie could not have come at a better time, with Brown currently dealing with a hamstring injury and the recent injury to their emerging weapon.

As previously discussed on Gridiron Heroics, Johnny Wilson will miss the entire 2025 season due to knee and ankle surgery. He was carted off the field during Tuesday’s practice after an offensive lineman rolled up on his leg. Poised for a larger offensive role in Year 2, Wilson was having an impressive training camp and could have been Jalen Hurts’ go-to target at the goal line with his 6-foot-6 frame, making him a prime red-zone weapon.

With Johnny Wilson out for the year and A.J. Browns’ Week 1 availability in question, John Metchie III could be in store for a crucial role to start the season. The last time he played alongside DeVonta Smith was in 2020 as a member of the Alabama Crimson Tide, where he served as a reliable complement to the 2020 Heisman Winner, hauling in 55 receptions for 916 yards and six touchdowns. If the Eagles provide Metchie with ample playing time and plenty of targets, which the Houston Texans failed to do, he has a chance to revive his NFL career.

Many fans agree with the sentiment that he can turn his career around under the right system.
