Since appointed West Ham manager, Graham Potter has taken 20 points from a possible 54, so with his seat already warming - especially after their opening day defeat to Sunderland - Potter will be desperate to impress at home tomorrow night.
"A disappointing result"
The Hammers 3-0 defeat to newly promoted Sunderland will certainly concern supporters and was unsurprisingly the epicentre of Potter's press conference this afternoon.
The Englishman noted himself a negative result like last Sunday's often attract more eyeballs than usual.
"Well there's a few more people in the press conference. That's what it means. But the reality of it is that its a disappointing result, of course it is, there's no getting away from that, its a bad result for us. At the same time you have to analyse the overall situation, you have to analyse the performance, you have to analyse how you can improve"
"The game wasn't a 3-0 game in my opinion, I thought we did a lot right until the first goal, I thought we calmed the situation down, an away performance that was relatively good, we were in control of the game."
"I felt they scored a goal out of pretty much nothing and then the environment makes it really challenging and we don't react as well as we'd like to react in that situation, which I think is fair, and then the second goal is the second phase of a free kick, which we don't do well-enough and the third's a corner and a breakaway and a mistake, so the score line is not nice."
With the negativity surrounding his team, Potter remained fully focused on starting the season in the best possible way.
"The scoreline creates negativity which we have to accept. But at the same time as I repeat I believe a lot in the players, I believe a lot in the team, I believe a lot in the club and my job is to support them and push to improve."
"The players were gutted after the game, properly gutted, there was optimism and there was positivity and we all understand that when you lose 3-0 its bad. So it's up to us to react, its up to us to show, its up to us to perform."
"I've known all along, its a work in progress, and I know that you always have to make that balance between expectation and reality, you have to keep working, you have to keep pushing. I think there's a lot more to come from the team. I'm confident in the players, I'm confident in what we have, I'm confident we can also improve. At the same time I also know a result like that (3-0) brings a lot of negativity and criticism, which is normal."
The Black Cats took the lead through an Eliezer Mayenda header in the 61st minute and once the net rippled, the Stadium of Light went into ecstasy.
From then on Potter's men found it difficult to ignite a spark going forward.
Potter looked ahead to tomorrow's game as a chance to recreate that atmosphere as a force for good, but understood his side's performance plays a big part in making the London Stadium a torrid experience for Enzo Maresca's side.
"The atmosphere at Sunderland was one of the best I've experienced in the Premier League to be fair, and obviously it makes a difference, that environment that atmosphere, you want it to be like that, our responsibility is to help our supporters get like that, we have to play better, we have to get better results, we know that. We need to connect more with our home fans and in that way to create a game for us."
Sunderland extended their lead through a Daniel Ballard header, but Wilson Isidor's goal in 92nd minute caused concern when a routine save ended in the bottom corner of new keeper Mads Hermansen's net.
Despite a poor debut Potter shut down the idea of the Danish keeper cominng out of the starting line-up.
"He's got goalkeeper coaches that support him, I've been checking him and looking at him and he's absolutely fine. He trained really well, and he'll play tomorrow."
"A big challenge"
Similarly to West Ham, Chelsea did not get off to the perfect start they wanted. Maresca's men drew 0-0 to Crystal Palace and created very little against a rigid Eagles defence.
Nevertheless, Potter believe his side will face a "talented squad" tomorrow evening.
"It will take a huge effort, a fantastic team performance, always a bit of luck, whenever you play football you need a little bit of that, its very simple playing against a top team. They're in a really good moment, because they've won the Club World Cup, talented squad, we have to perform well, balance between attack and defence has to be really good, and we have to give everything."
"You can imagine, I have't had too much time to reflect where Chelsea are. I've been thinking a lot where we're at. What I know is Chelsea have got a very very talented manager, talented squad, off the back of a successful summer period, they're constantly investing in the team with young players, so we expect a big challenge.
Compared to the Blues, who's summer spending has eclipsed £200 million, the Hammers have spent just £70m, yet, Potter does not sound confident the club will open their cheque book again this window.
"We have to try to find the right players always, as I repeat. It's about the right player, the right profile, the right person, always. And that isn't easy to do, especially when you've got restrictions of PSR, every club has them. I said last week it's not like we can go for (Alexander) Isak. We have a certain market and that's fine. So our job is to look for players that can improve us externally and at the same time help the players we have here. Clearly we have to do that and that's what my focus is on."
"I see it that the squad has had investment over a number of years and we have to get more out of the squad that we have. As I said we will also look to improve and we'll do that together, we'll do that collectively and we'll try and find the best solution.
It's great especially when you have a bad result that everybody thinks that a SILVER BULLET is going to come from outside and save us all. History will suggest it doesn't work like that. It's about being a club, its about being a team, its about being together, accepting the criticism when a bad result comes, but to get on and do your work and take that responsibility."
