Speedy former 49ers receiver may be teasing a return to the NFL

With the San Francisco 49ers desperately trying to make sure they have some healthy wide receivers to begin the regular season, former Niners wide receiver Marquise Goodwin may be teasing a return to the NFL on social media.

In a recent Instagram post, the 34-year-old Goodwin, captioned the post by writing, "Some retire from greatness, I just change my positions. New field, same flight, I just switch the conditions.#StillHim#Imback."

It is a fairly cryptic post, but in another post, he boasted that he can still run a 40-yard dash in 4.2 seconds.

His most recent post on Instagram was all in praise of the 49ers as he wrote, "Red and gold in my veins, not just on my skin. Some chapters you live once, others live on within....Would yall like to see me have a meet and greet in the bay, for old times sake? Vote below and tag @49ers as much as possible, and I’ll fly myself there and make a movie out of it. Love yall forever 🤞🏿This organization and fan base CHANGED MY LIFE! #NinerGang#Faithful."

Maybe Goodwin would try to squeeze in a tryout with the Niners on this proposed trip back to the Bay Area. With how decimated their wide receiving corps has already been by injuries, it may not be the craziest thing in the world to see if Goodwin still has anything left in the tank.

The Niners brought the former Olympian in once before back in 2017. He had his best NFL season in 2017 as he recorded 962 receiving yards on 56 receptions with two touchdowns including a heartbreaking one after the loss of his child.

Goodwin truly did endear himself to 49ers fans even though his playing time did diminish over the seasons with San Francisco, and he eventually moved on to other teams, including the dreaded Seattle Seahawks.

The last NFL action Goodwin saw was back in 2023 with the Cleveland Browns. He had just four receptions for 67 yards that season.

Given his age and how long it has been since he played in the NFL, it is questionable whether he would be all that effective.

Still, if he really is looking to make some sort of comeback there would be no better situation for him to do it than with the 49ers given his love for the franchise, familiarity with the offense, and the fact that San Francisco is in desperate need of help at wide receiver.
