Tottenham leading the race for Juventus star amidst competition from PL rivals

Tottenham are in a four-way battle with Bournemouth, Wolves and Newcastle United for the signing of Juventus right-back Nicolo Savona

It has not been plain sailing for Tottenham Hotspur this transfer window.

They had to first deal with the setback of missing out on Nottingham Forest midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White, before club icon Son Heung-min departed for Los Angeles FC. Then came the news of James Maddison’s ACL rupture, ruling him out for the foreseeable future.

Spurs were well and truly closing in on the signing of Crystal Palace star Eberechi Eze before arch-rivals Arsenal hijacked the deal on Wednesday night. Losing the England international to bitter rivals Arsenal has seen the Tottenham faithful go into complete meltdown on X. Eze is poised to complete a move to Arsenal, with a medical booked on Friday.

In addition to a creative midfielder, Spurs are also eyeing defensive reinforcements. A right-back is on the club’s agenda, as evidenced by their interest in Manchester City star Rico Lewis. However, Lewis has agreed to sign a new deal with Manchester City, thereby ending any kind of speculation surrounding his future.

This has seen the Lilywhites shift their focus to other alternative targets, and it looks they are planning to raid the Italian market.

Tottenham eye move for Juventus right-back

According to Italian newspaper La Valle (h/t Sport Witness), Tottenham are leading the race for the signing of Juventus right-back Nicolo Savona. Newcastle United, Wolves and Bournemouth are also keen on the player.

A product of the Juventus academy, Nicolo Savona broke into the senior team last season, making 40 appearances across all competitions. The Italian had made three appearances at the Club World Cup before an ankle injury cut short his campaign. Recent reports suggest the young defender will return to training shortly after recovering from his ankle problem.

Savona recently signed a new contract with Juventus until 2030 (Transfermarkt), although the Turin giants are renowned for selling young players in order to fund the experienced campaigners.

Thomas Frank eyeing a right-back to compete with Pedro Porro this season

Thomas Frank wants to improve defensive depth

Looking at the current makeup of the squad, reinforcing the right-back area should not stand as a priority considering Thomas Frank has Pedro Porro and Djed Spence at his disposal. This makes interest in Savona surprising for some, but Frank could very well decide to use Spence as an option on the left flank this season.

Destiny Udogie has had injury problems during his time in north London and is currently sidelined too, which saw Spence start at left-back in Tottenham’s 3-0 win over Burnley in their opening game of the new campaign. If Spence has been chosen to battle Udogie for the left-back/wing-back spot, a move for Savona to compete with Porro at right-back makes total sense.

A right-back by trade, Savona can also operate on the opposite flank and also in a back three. Such versatility could add a lot of value to Frank’s squad. The Italy youth international, who is on a comeback trail from an ankle injury, looks ideal to give the Lilywhites more defensive depth and help them cope with the added pressure of playing in the Champions League.

That said, Spurs must step up their pursuit of the Juventus defender and bring him to N17 before the transfer deadline.
