Crystal Palace achieved yet another moment of history, claiming their first-ever European victory as they defeated Fredrikstad 1-0, giving them the advantage ahead of their trip to Norway next week.
Jean-Philippe Mateta got the all-important goal, with an instinctive header that flew past Martin Børsheim, becoming the scorer of Palace's first goal in Europe.
It was a relatively comfortable performance for Crystal Palace, who may feel unlucky to only be taking a one-goal lead with them to Norway. Fredrikstad put in a solid defensive performance, and significantly for them, maintained composure after conceding the opener.
Story of the match:
Fredrikstad were expected to be a stubborn defence for the home team to try and break down. It did not take long for this to be apparent as Glasner's side struggled to create any clear-cut chances for the attackers to pounce on.
Twenty minutes in, the intensity was beginning to grow as Palace's build-up play began to increase in speed, providing Jefferson Lerma with a chance. The Colombian, starting as a centre back on the night, came the closest of anyone to this point, striking the ball just wide of the right post from outside the box.
This was quickly followed up by a chance from Adam Wharton that forced a save from Martin Børshiem - Palace were gaining confidence.
Fredrikstad did not go without their own chances as in the 32nd minute, Sondre Sørløkk brought the ball down fantastically and eased passed Lerma before squaring the ball in the box. The ball was deflected well over the goal but certainly provided a scare for Palace.
Palace had surged in the final five minutes before half-time, as Jean-Phillipe Mateta thought he had given the Eagles a lead. The ball fell to the Frenchman on the edge of the box, who unleashed a venomous strike that was heading for the bottom corner before a deflection off a defender tipped the ball onto the post.
Ismaila Sarr was next to have a great chance as his header was brilliantly prevented by an instinctive save from Bøsheim, who continued to impress after coming in for the injured Valdemar Birksø.
The hosts were unable to break the deadlock in the first half, but they would not have to wait long for their first-ever European goal in the second period, courtesy of Mateta. The Frenchman got his head on Will Hughes' initial shot, giving Bøsheim no time to react and Palace a memorable moment. The Eagles were off the mark in Europe.
There was a feeling that, now Fredrikstad's brave defence had been breached, the goals would start flowing for Palace as the Norwegian side would look to respond.
This was not the case as Aristokratene's (The Aristocrat's) defence remained resilient, determined to make their job next week no harder than it had to be.
The game would end 1-0, handing Glasner's side their first European victory and an important lead as they look to secure their place in the UEFA Conference League next week.
The Eagles will undoubtedly be happy with the result, but there will certainly be the feeling that the scoreline could have been a bigger one. Palace had five big chances to Fredrikstad's singular one and completely dominated proceedings with 74% of possession.
If next week goes swimmingly for Crystal Palace, then these chances will not be remembered. However, if the Norwegian side manages to turn the scoreline around, questions could be asked about whether the Eagles were clinical enough in the first leg.
Nevertheless, it was another historic night for Palace, who continue to make history for themselves.
Player of the Match:
Jean-Phillipe Mateta
The 28-year-old was the obvious pick for the player of the match on the night. He came very close to opening the scoring in the first, and would have if not for a slight deflection.
But he persisted and got his reward in the second half, etching his name into another chapter of the Crystal Palace history books with an instinctive finish.
The Frenchman was always fancied to be one of the difference makers in this one. With a key figure in Eberechi Eze on his way out of the club, he has stepped up tonight in a big way and given his side a valuable lead ahead of next week.
