Over the course of the offseason, the San Francisco 49ers have had some issues arise at the wide receiver position. But, the options to help fill those holes are not yet dried up.
The 49ers recently traded for Skyy Moore in a deal with the Kansas City Chiefs, but if they think that single move is going to solve their problems, they are sadly mistaken. Moore might be a one-trick pony, and that one trick is on special teams. He has yet to show any value on offense.
One notable free agent who could join the fold might remind some fans of another previous veteran signing in Anquan Boldin. It's Amari Cooper, who is still available to sign, believe it or not. If Cooper came to San Francisco, the 49ers would have a veteran, with experience, who could step in and play meaningful snaps.
Amari Cooper would make things interesting for the 49ers during roster cuts
At the moment, the 49ers are still without Brandon Aiyuk, who is recovering from a torn ACL and will eventually return this season. He very well could get placed on injured reserve, which would open up a roster spot. Don't forget, Jauan Jennings is also nursing a calf injury.
Rookie Jordan Watkins is also recovering from a high-ankle sprain he suffered earlier this month, so there are currently and potentially a few spots up for grabs, which is why the move for Moore made some sense.
Between Moore, Russell Gage, Robbie Chosen, Terique Owens and Isaiah Hodgins, the 49ers don't have a lot of options at the moment to fill those end-of-roster spots. Cooper would immediately join the likes of Ricky Pearsall, Jennings, Watkins and Jacob Cowing as the most likely Week 1 locks. This is, of course, assuming Aiyuk ends up on IR and Watkins is available.
There is a lot at play, here.
But, Cooper would get a spot. That's for certain. And, if he still had a desire to play, he'd have a chance at some targets. That's also a big question because, after the Buffalo Bills traded for him last year, he did not have the type of impact they had hoped.
If Cooper is locked-in, then he still presents a WR2 or WR3 option, no question.
