West Ham vs Chelsea Preview, Premier League Gameweek 2, 2025

After disappointing results in matchday one, both West Ham United and Chelsea will be looking to bounce back at the London Stadium on Friday night.

Chelsea did not live up to expectations after a pre-season that instilled more confidence in fans of the World Champions, drawing 0-0 with Crystal Palace. The Blues did not show enough quality in attack as João Pedro and Cole Palmer were unable to have any say in proceedings.

The Blues will be desperate to take all three points back to West London with them as they attempt to stay within touching distance of the likes of Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City, who all picked up victories in the opening weekend.

They travel to a place that has not always been easy for them, in the London Stadium. In fact, Chelsea have only won 2 of their last 6 matches at the home of the Hammers. But fans will take encouragement from last season's performance in this fixture, where Chelsea prevailed 3-0.

West Ham are also in dire need of three points as the pressure grows around former Chelsea manager Graham Potter. They had a dismal opening match to their season, losing 3-0 to newly-promoted Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.

Potter will not be worried about his future for the moment after some reassuring words from West Ham's Vice Chair Karren Brady were reported following the defeat. But Potter will not want to put any more pressure on his job.

Recent history is on the side of the Hammers as Chelsea have not defeated West Ham in back-to-back away games for 11 years. But the Blues are certainly not the team that they will want to see after the heavy defeat on the opening weekend, as they will be looking to put in a strong attacking display after a dull one last weekend.

Team News:

Chelsea:

The Blues remain thin in defensive areas as Benoit Badiashile remains out of contention for the team, but is on his way to a return. Levi Colwill, of course, is out of action for the foreseeable future after sustaining an ACL injury in training. Tosin Adarabioyo remains a doubt for the West Ham match, but is set to be ready for Fulham next weekend.

Much like Badiashile, Romeo Lavia is nearing a return for the Blues but will not be ready to face the Hammers. On the other hand, Wesley Fofana is set to be in contention to get his first minutes for Chelsea since March.

Nicolas Jackson has now served his three-match suspension but will most likely not feature, as the striker looks to be on his way out of SW6. Maresca may opt to replace Jamie Gittens with Estêvão after a difficult game for the Englishman.

West Ham United:

Graham Potter is expected to make some changes to his team after the heavy loss suffered by his side last week. Crysencio Summerville remains out of contention, leaving West Ham short in the attacking area that used to be occupied by Mohammed Kudus.

After getting some minutes off the bench last weekend, Callum Wilson could be in line for his first start for his new team following the move from Newcastle on a free transfer.

West Ham fans should also expect changes to the midfield pairing after James Ward-Prowse and Guido Rodriguez struggled to work together against Sunderland.

Predicted Lineups:

West Ham:

Hermansen; Wan-Bissaka, Todibo, Kilman, Aguerd, Diouf; Alvarez, Soucek; Bowen, Wilson, Paqueta

Chelsea:

Sanchez; James, Acheampong, Chalobah, Cucurella; Caicedo, Enzo; Estêvão, Palmer, Neto; João Pedro

Key Players:

Enzo Fernandez:

Perhaps not the obvious pick for Chelsea, but it feels like a game where the Argentinian needs to and should put in a strong performance after what was, by his standards, a sub-par performance against Crystal Palace.

The midfielder needs to help Cole Palmer unlock this West Ham defence that will try and be stubborn to keep the Blues out. Enzo has shown in the past just how good of a creative asset he is for the Blues, and this is a game where he must show this.

It would be the perfect response to last weekend, as the Argentinian will be crucial in keeping Chelsea within touching distance of the title contenders.

Jarrod Bowen:

Chelsea look likely to have the control in this one, which makes it all the more important that West Ham take their chances when they get them. Jarrod Bowen is someone you would want the ball to fall to for these chances.

The Englishman is certainly West Ham's strongest attacking asset, finding the back of the net in his most recent match against the Blues in February.

If Bowen can get the chances he needs, which he could well do given Chelsea's weakened defensive line, he could cause the Blues some problems in this one.
