Mike Vrabel expected roster spots to be up for grabs ahead of the Patriots’ preseason finale Thursday night against the Giants.
Vrabel was asked pregame on 98.5 The Sports Hub if three or four roster spots were available before the preseason game.
“No, I would say there’s a lot more than that. This is our first year,” Vrabel said. “We’ve got to get it right. We’re going to have to get the right people in the building and on this football team. Whether that’s after their performance tonight or that’s next week, however that works, we have an obligation to the football team to get the right people. So, there’s a lot more than that that’s available, and a lot of things will change between now and the regular season.”
That last sentence seems to indicate that the Patriots could add players via trade or the waiver wire before the season kicks off Sept. 7 against the Raiders.
Based on who was dressed for Thursday’s preseason opener, the left guard spot is still open between rookie Jared Wilson and veteran Ben Brown. Safety, tight end and cornerback roles also could be undetermined.
The Patriots must trim their roster from 91 players down to 53 by Aug. 26 at 4 p.m. ET.
