The father of Boston Celtics star Jaylen Brown was arrested Wednesday on an attempted murder charge for allegedly stabbing another man several times, according to authorities and published reports.
Las Vegas Metro Police Department said in a statement that officers were called at 5:42 p.m. to the 1500 block of South Buffalo Drive, where they spotted a man “suffering from several stab wounds.”
The victim was taken to a local hospital, where he was listed in critical condition, police said.
Meanwhile, the suspect, identified by police as Quenton Marselles Brown, 57, was stopped a short distance from the scene and detained, according to authorities.
He was “arrested and booked into the Clark County Detention Center for [attempted] murder,” police said.
It wasn’t clear if he had hired an attorney.
Las Vegas court records show that Brown has been charged with five felonies, attempted murder, three counts of battery with a deadly weapon resulting in substantial bodily injury, and fighting or challenging to fight, involving the use of a deadly weapon.
During Brown’s initial court appearance Thursday in Las Vegas Justice Court, Judge Suzan Baucum found probable cause to support the charges and set his bail at $300,000. If released, Brown must wear an ankle monitor and was ordered to have no contact with the victim, court filings show.
“The State has provided clear and convincing evidence that no less restrictive alternative to monetary bail will satisfy its interests in ensuring the defendant’s presence and/or community safety,” the judge’s order said.
Brown’s next court hearing was scheduled for Tuesday.
Las Vegas police wouldn’t confirm that Marselles Brown is the father of the Celtics star, but TMZ reported that he was, quoting sources who said the violent altercation stemmed from a dispute over a parking spot.
Marselles Brown is a former heavyweight boxer, compiling a 33-18-1 record that included fights with former champions Tommy Morrison and Trevor Berbick, the Globe reported in 2020, when Jaylen Brown was training with his grandfather, Marselles Brown’s father Willie Brown, during the pandemic.
Jaylen Brown’s agent didn’t immediately return voice and email messages seeking comment Thursday. A Celtics spokesperson declined to comment.
