Online dispute over NBA 2K25 turns into fatal shooting in Miami-Dade parking lot

A heated debate online over popular video game NBA 2K25 devolved into a Miami-Dade man gunning down another in an apartment complex parking lot near Biscayne Gardens, deputies say.

Derrick Terrell Ates II, 23, was playing NBA2K25 on his PlayStation when he began arguing with an unidentified man using the console’s live-chat, an arrest report shows. The quarrel continued to escalate, spurring Ates to send the man his location.

Around 11:40 a.m. on Aug. 14, the man met Ates at his home, Golden Lakes Apartments, 777 NW 155th Lane. It’s unclear where he drove from.

The two began arguing, which led the man to slap Ates, the report read. Ates pulled out a gun and shot the unarmed man several times, killing him, before running into his apartment.

He surrendered to Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office deputies, who arrested and charged him with second-degree murder with a weapon. Deputies said Ates gave a full confession.

As of Thursday, Ates still remained in the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, records show.
